Apple has postponed the launch of its artificial intelligence features, known as Apple Intelligence, which were initially set to debut with the iPhone iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 releases in September. Announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, Apple Intelligence includes enhancements for Siri and Safari. The rollout is now expected in October, with beta testing for iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 beginning soon. Some features, such as Siri’s ability to use on-device data to answer questions, will not be available at launch.
The delay means that early models of the iPhone 16 may ship without Apple Intelligence capabilities. Apple is collaborating with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT-4o into its new operating systems for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This partnership aims to enhance Siri’s functionality by leveraging ChatGPT’s expertise.
The introduction of Apple Intelligence is seen as a crucial step for Apple to compete in the AI space, where it has lagged behind rivals like Google and Microsoft. While ChatGPT will be available to Apple users at no cost, Apple reportedly will not pay for the technology, valuing the partnership’s exposure over direct financial transactions.
