While cover crops have long been touted as a solution to the agricultural industry’s environmental concerns, U.S. farmers are reportedly still reluctant to add these crops into their rotation.
According to figures from 2021, U.S farmers in the Midwest only planted cover crops on approximately 7% of their land.
Even with government subsidies taken into account, farmers’ proven concerns about cover crops affecting their bottom line have pushed them away from fully adopting the crops into their process.
However, if implemented properly, cover crops are capable of facilitating healthy soil and fighting the effects of climate change.
