On Wednesday, the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service said that 2023 is “virtually certain” to be the hottest year on record.
According to the service’s scientists, 2023 is expected to surpass 2016 as the year with the highest temperature average ever recorded.
The C3S said that climate change and burning fossil fuels are the primary culprit behind the globe’s warming temperatures.
“We can say with near certainty that 2023 will be the warmest year on record, and is currently 1.43ºC above the preindustrial average,” said C3S Deputy Director Samantha Burgess.
