Following the enactment of new energy efficiency regulations by the Biden administration on Tuesday, it’s now next to impossible for U.S. consumers to purchase the majority of incandescent light bulbs.
The new rules require all lightbulbs sold to reach at least 45 lumens per watt, ruling out most incandescent bulbs from purchase.
The move will likely push U.S. consumers toward the now-popular LED bulbs, which both drive down electricity demand nationwide and emit less greenhouse gasses than incandescent alternatives.
However, it should be noted that there is no outright ban on incandescent bulbs and that some specific variations of incandescent bulbs – such as oven lights – will be exempt from the 45 lumens per watt regulation.
