More than 100 elephants have died in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park due to climate change-caused droughts, local authorities and conservationist groups say.
The ongoing El Nino weather phenomenon has reportedly pushed Zimbabwe’s rainy season back to a later, more erratic start, leaving the park’s elephants without sufficient water sources.
According to scientists, the average adult elephant requires 52 gallons of water per day for survival.
“El Nino is making an already dire situation worse,” said Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesperson Tinashe Farawo.
