On Thursday, California regulators announced plans to implement new regulations on the use of groundwater across the state.
The move marks the first time legislators have intervened in California’s groundwater management in the state’s history.
The regulations would reportedly hold Californian farmers liable if they fail to uphold their part in protecting the state’s aquifers.
Regulators also said they will hold a public forum in California’s agriculturally dominant San Joaquin Valley in the near future.
