According to a new study, hurricanes in the Atlantic ocean are now double as likely to increase to a Category 3 storm or higher within 24 hours.
Hurricanes that intensify quickly are more difficult to evacuate and predict damage impact.
“These findings should serve as an urgent warning,” said study author Andra Garner.
The likelihood of rapid intensification is only set to grow as climate change continues to warm ocean water temperatures, creating a perfect storm for hurricanes to get stronger and stronger.
