Twitter has been hit by a $250-million lawsuit from National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) on the grounds that the social media platform is “breeding massive copyright infringement that harms music creators.”
The music publishers claim that Twitter has, for years, allowed users to share copyrighted songs without a license, adding that the company has adopted an even more abusive approach to music sharing since it was purchased by billionaire Elon Musk last fall.
The suit encompasses claims from NMPA members — including Universal, Sony and Warner Music Group — the cite morer than 1,700 songs having been tweeted unlawfully.
Although Twitter refused to comment on the case, the NMPA pointed out that the platform’s chief competitors pay licensing fees to use copyrighted music in accordance with the law.
