The iconic Three Mile Island nuclear plant will restart after a five-year hiatus to provide energy for Microsoft data center’s as the tech giant seeks find carbon-free power sources.
The owner of Three Mile Island, Constellation, lauded the event as a symbol of the rebirth of nuclear power as energy consumption by data centers surges. Data centers will consume 8% of total US electricity demand by 2030, according to Goldman Sachs.
Three Mile Island closed in 2019 as it failed to compete against cheap natural gas and renewable energy.
The plant will be renamed the Crane Clean Energy Center. Three Mile Island was the site of the US’ worse nuclear disaster in 1979.
