The eight newspapers owned by Alden Global Capital’s MediaNews Group are suing OpenAI and Microsoft over alleged copyright infringement, claiming that it used the newspapers’ reporting to train its generative artificial intelligence systems, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot.
The group of newspapers, which includes the Chicago Tribune and New York Daily News, join other media organizations that have sued Microsoft and OpenAI, including the New York Times, The Intercept, Raw Story and Alternet. The group is requesting the court for unspecified damages and an order blocking additional infringement.
Steven Lieberman, a lawyer for MediaNew Group, claimed that OpenAI’s success was built upon the work of others, and it “think[s] somehow they can get away with taking content” without payment or permission. OpenAI defended itself through a spokesperson who said that the business takes “great care in our products and design process to support news organizations.”
