Epic Games, the video game developer behind juggernaut multiplayer game Fortnite, has launched a suit against Google alleging that the technology giant runs an illegal monopoly in its Google Play app store distribution.
The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in California’s Northern District, claims that Google “controls, surveys, and taxes transactions between users and developers.”
The legal action came following Epic Games’ choice to influence users toward downloading Fortnite off of the developer’s own site rather than use the Google Play store, resulting in Google removing the game off of its application store entirely due to a supposed violation of developer rules on the app store.
However, Google says the issue between the two parties is that Epic Games wants access to Google’s billions of users without paying its app store’s requisite fees placed on other developers.
