More than 30,000 Boeing workers went on strike midnight Friday as the company’s largest union failed to reach an agreement with management.
The Union sought a pay raise of approximately 40% while the company’s tentative proposal was 25%. The company’s tentative proposal was rejected by 94.6% of the workers with the union arguing that the company was negotiating in bad faith.
The strike comes as the company’s reputation lies in tatters after accidents with its Max 737 plane, a whistle blower death and astronauts stranded due to safety concerns regarding its Boeing Starliner space craft.
“The message was clear that the tentative agreement we reached with IAM leadership was not acceptable to the members,” the company said in a statement. “We remain committed to resetting our relationship with our employees and the union, and we are ready to get back to the table to reach a new agreement.”
