A number of major airlines have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government over new regulations that would require the companies to disclose all potential airline fees up front.
Along with the industry lobby Airlines For America, the carriers Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, JetBlue and United joined in on the lawsuit, which says that the Department of Transportation has overstepped its authority in establishing the new rule. However, the DOT estimates that the change could save consumers a half-billion dollars annually.
“The ancillary fee rule by the Department of Transportation will greatly confuse consumers who will be inundated with information that will only serve to complicate the buying process,” lobby Airlines For America said in a statement. “DOT’s attempt to regulate private business operations in a thriving marketplace is beyond its authority.”
