President Trump delivered a nearly two-hour State of the Union address, saying the U.S. has undergone a “transformation like no one has ever seen before and a turnaround for the ages.”
During his address, the President offered a strong defense of tariffs and said no changes are on the table, proclaiming, “the deals are all done.”
Trump acknowledged “the Supreme Court’s unfortunate involvement” in his economic policy before the four justices who made the ruling: Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Elena Kagan, and Justice Amy Coney Barrett.
Trump stated that congressional action won’t be needed to maintain his tariffs, and he even asserted that the duties could eventually “substantially replace the modern income tax, taking a great financial burden off the people I love.”
Democrats pledge to block an extension of the new 10% global tariffs when they come up for congressional review in 150 days.
Trump also proposed establishing a government-supported 401(k)-style plan for U.S. workers whose employers do not offer a retirement match.
“My administration will give these oft-forgotten American workers, great people, the people that built our country, access to the same type of retirement plan offered to every federal worker,” Trump said. “We will match your contribution with up to $1,000 each year.”
Trump said the economy is “roaring like never before… Inflation is plummeting. In 12 months, my administration has driven core inflation to the lowest level in more than five years.”
The president’s speech is seen as an important opportunity to reset his economic policies ahead of the 2026 midterms, which loom less than nine months away.
