In an effort to control the future of artificial intelligence, Elon Musk released the raw computer code behind Grok, his version of an AI chatbot. Grok, stylized to provide sassy answered, is a product of Musk’s company xAI.
By open sourcing the chatbot, meaning that everyone can see and use the code, Musk turned up the volume on a conversation about whether this type of move makes AI technology safer or more prone to misuse. Musk has been a vocal proponent of open sourcing.
The code’s publication allows other software developers and companies to tweak and reuse it to build their own AI systems, including other chatbots. Other AI technologies that have done some open sourcing include Meta’s LLaMa, Google and a French start-up companies, Mistral.
OpenAI had notably not open sourced its code for ChatGPT. Musk recently sued OpenAI for breaking its promise not to open up the code for everyone to see and use.
