After years of pushback against right-to-repair legislature, technology giant Apple has lent its support to California’s proposed right-to-repair bill, California Senate Bill 244.
The bill, if enacted, will require phone manufacturers to allow consumers to fix and repair broken and damaged devices by themselves.
While Apple’s policy team said it would not support the bill if it would require the company’s anti-theft features to be turned off during repairs, Apple lobbyists reportedly sent a recent letter saying “we will continue to support the bill, so long as it continues to provide protections for customers and innovators.”
“We support SB 244 because it includes requirements that protect individual users’ safety and security, as well as product manufacturers’ intellectual property,” said the lobbyists.
