The fallout from Maui’s devastating wildfire is leaving many worried that greedy outsiders could attempt to take advantage of the island’s current state.
Predatory land grabs have marred the native legacy of the Hawaiian aisle for over a century, a history locals fear may be doomed to repeat itself in the wake of the wildfire.
“Fear of predatory land grabbers coming in is legitimate because it’s already happening, it’s been happening for generations now,” native community organizer Kaniela Ing told CNN.
However, Governor Josh Green has promised to prevent greedy individuals from capitalizing on the tragedy, warning “don’t make the mistake of testing us in that space, please.”
