The Biden administration has tightened regulations of exports of artificial intelligence chips and chipmaking tools to China, it announced Friday. The rules, originally released in October, are aimed at impeding the country’s chipmaking industry in the interest of America’s national security.
The revised rules are attempting to stop shipments of Nvidia’s advanced AI chips to China and go into effect on Thursday. The 166-page document also clarify some details of the original rules, such as the fact that the regulations apply not only to chip shipments, but also laptops containing the chips.
The Commerce Department says it will likely again revise the restrictions on shipments to China as necessary.
