The first federal government shutdown since 2018 started at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, after lawmakers and President Trump ended negotiations following unsuccessful funding talks.
The shutdown occurred when Democrats blocked a Republican stopgap funding bill that didn’t meet their demands. No compromise was put forward, resulting in the funding lapse and government shutdown.
The most recent shutdown occurred during Trump’s first term, spanning 2018-19, and set the record for the longest in American history.
Following the shutdown, federal agencies will implement their contingency plans and send hundreds of thousands of government workers home to wait out the stalemate.
The economic effects could become apparent quickly as government spending drops significantly.
