Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has confirmed that the U.S. and China will hold discussions later this week in Malaysia, following his virtual meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.
President Trump spoke from Air Force One on Sunday evening, outlining his list of demands for the upcoming discussions.
He stated that rare earth minerals, fentanyl, and soybeans as the United States’ top concerns for the renewed trade negotiations.
“I don’t want them (China) to play the rare earth game with us,” he said.
Trump also reiterated his demand that China “stop with the fentanyl,” blaming Beijing for supplying its precursor chemicals, which he has said contribute to the U.S. opioid crisis.
Another key demand was that China resume U.S. soybean purchases.
The President’s demands follow his statement last week that threatened high tariffs on Chinese goods were “not sustainable.”
According to Trump, the three discussion topics are very “normal things.”
