Beginning Tuesday, American importers will be subject to an additional tax on goods made in Canada, Mexico, and China, as announced by President Donald Trump on Saturday.
The President has imposed a 25% tariff on all goods from Mexico and most imports from Canada, along with an additional 10% tariff on Chinese products.
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump stated, “We don’t need anything they have. We have unlimited energy, we should make our own cars, and we have more lumber than we can ever use.”
These tariffs are anticipated to gradually raise prices for U.S. consumers, as importers will likely transfer the extra costs to retailers.
Following Trump’s announcement, Canada and Mexico have ordered retaliatory tariffs. China stated it would “take necessary countermeasures.”
Canadian Prime Minister candidate Chrystia Freeland called Trump’s tariffs “a betrayal of America’s closest friend.”
In a video message released on X, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum offered the United States the opportunity to revoke tariffs and collaborate more closely. Sheinbaum dismissed claims from the White House that the Mexican government has connections to criminal groups, labeling these accusations as “irresponsible” and “slanderous.” She added that the United States bears some responsibility for the fentanyl crisis.
