During his tour in Malaysia, President Donald Trump stated he does not expect to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney “for a while,” despite PM Carney insisting that the two countries are close to an agreement on reducing metals tariffs.
Speaking from Air Force One, Trump was questioned about the potential of meeting with Carney, who will also attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea later this week. The President replied, “I don’t want to meet with him. No, I’m not going to be meeting with them for a while. I’m very happy with the deal we have right now with Canada. We’re going to let it ride.”
Trump’s remarks came after he announced on Saturday that he would raise the import tax on Canadian goods by 10%. This decision was in response to Ontario government advertisements featuring former US President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs.
When asked about the timing of the additional tariff, Trump replied, “We’ll see.”
Carney mentioned he hasn’t had any contact with the U.S. president since the negotiations ended. “We’re ready to sit down when they’re ready to do that.” The Prime Minister also noted that his government has achieved “considerable progress” on tariffs related to steel, aluminum, and energy. “There were a series of detailed, specific, very comprehensive discussions,” he added.
