Just hours before a scheduled hearing in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., President Trump filed a petition with the judge to deny Federal Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook’s request for an injunction, which would prevent him from firing her.
Trump’s request follows a turbulent week of debate between the President and Federal Reserve Governor Cook, whom Trump claims he has dismissed from her position due to an accusation of mortgage fraud.
On Thursday, Governor Cook sued Trump, the Fed Board of Governors, and Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, arguing that President Trump’s firing of her is illegal, and requested an order to keep her in her position while the case is being litigated.
In today’s court filing, the Federal Reserve did not take a position on Cook’s lawsuit challenging her termination by the president.
The Fed, however, requested the judge to issue a “prompt ruling” to settle the dispute, which is likely to go to the Supreme Court.
