President Donald Trump has announced a 25% import tax on all steel and aluminum entering the United States, stating there would be “no exemptions”.
The new tariffs are scheduled for 12 March.
The President said the tariffs were a “a big deal, the beginning of making America rich again. Our nation requires steel and aluminium to be made in America, not in foreign lands.”
Trump hinted at further tariffs on foreign goods, “It’s time for our great industries to come back to America… this is the first of many.”
Since the announcement, other nations, including Canada, have warned of retaliation. Canada’s Minister of Innovation, François-Philippe Champagne, deemed the tariffs “totally unjustified.”
Champagne told reporters, “Canadian steel and aluminium support key industries in the U.S. from defence, shipbuilding, energy to automotive. This is making North America more competitive and secure.”
Canada is the largest steel supplier to the U.S.
