President Trump has once again shown leniency towards white-collar criminals by pardoning Changpeng Zhao, the founder and former CEO of crypto exchange Binance.
Analysts predict the pardon could open the door for Binance to grow in the United States as the crypto industry flourishes under the Trump administration.
Zhao, a Canadian citizen born in China, paid a $50 million fine and spent nearly four months in prison after pleading guilty when U.S. authorities stated that Binance had not reported suspicious transactions involving organizations such as Hamas and al Qaeda, as well as websites that sell child sexual abuse materials.
Following significant lobbying of the Trump administration, the White House claimed that the Biden administration had “overly prosecuted” Zhao’s case and ultimately granted him a pardon.
Critics state that the full pardon could allow Zhao to return to lead the business he co-founded in 2017.
After his release, Zhao posted on X to thank the President, stating, “I am deeply grateful for today’s pardon and to President Trump for upholding America’s commitment to fairness, innovation, and justice.” Zhao added that he “will do everything we can to help make America the Capital of Crypto.”
