President Donald Trump has announced on Truth Social that he is halting “all trade negotiations” with Canada.
The President explained that recent television ads protesting U.S. tariffs led to the decision to end trade relations with the United States’ closest neighbor, as he believed they were aimed at influencing U.S. court decisions.
Trump was especially offended by an ad created by the government of Ontario depicting former President Ronald Reagan.
Trump posted, “The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs.”
“The ad was for $75,000. They only did this to interfere with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, and other courts. TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY, OF THE U.S.A. Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”
President Trump’s Truth Social post comes after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated his goal to double Canada’s exports to countries beyond the US, citing the threat from Trump’s tariffs.
The increase in cross-border tensions threatens nearly $2.7 billion USD worth of goods and services that pass the U.S.-Canada border daily.
