Today, President-elect Trump started naming the new members of his cabinet before his return to the White House on 20 January 2025. The first official administration members are a Chief of Staff, a Border Tsar and a UN Ambassador.
Susie Wiles, who has been called “the ice maiden” by Trump, will become the newest Chief of Staff. She will be the first woman to be in the role. Wiles, 67, has worked in Republican politics since Ronald Reagan’s 1980 campaign. Wiles is hoped to bring a sense of order to the Republican camp, as she is said to have the ability to handle herself around the big egos of Trump’s cabinet.
The administration’s new UN Ambassador will be New York’s Elise Stefanik. “Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” Trump said in a statement
Tom Homan, an ex-police officer of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), will be Trump’s “Border Tsar”. Homan will return to Trump’s administration for the second time, this time controlling the border and immigration – a key component in the Republican campaign. The job is considered a huge task, as Trump has promised mass deportations of millions of undocumented migrants.
Trump made the announcement to hire Homan on Truth Social, calling him a border control “stalwart”. Earlier in Trump’s campaign, Homan said, “Trump comes back in January, I’ll be on his heels coming back … and I will run the biggest deportation force this country has ever seen.” It is estimated that 11 million undocumented immigrants are currently residing in the US. Trump will focus on deporting immigrants with criminal records, he says.
Other big names rumoured to be joining the Republican administration are Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Elon Musk.
