Musician Sting has sold his back catalog to Universal records for a reported $300 million.
The sale follows similar transactions by other headline artists since 2020 with Bruce Springsteen selling his entire back catalogue to Sony Music for $500 million, Bob Dylan his 600-song catalog for $400 million, David Bowie’s estate his catalogue for $250 million and Neil Young 50% of his catalogue for $150 million.
The 70-year-old Sting, born as Gordon Summer in 1951, had great success as bass player and vocalist of the Police from 1977 to 1984 recording hits such as Every Breath You Take and Roxanne, continuing as a solo artist afterwards.
The sale comes as music companies seek to capitalize on the recovery of the music industry on the back of digital services, such as streaming.
