Sony-Disney co-production Spiderman had $1.05 billion in box office receipts over the Christmas weekend, the first film to break that mark since the beginning of the pandemic.
The co-production allows Sony-owned Spiderman to be appear in the Marvel Universe movies currently owned by Disney.
“The partnership between these two Hollywood entities is clearly one of great benefit to both,” BoxOffice.com chief analyst Shawn Robbins told CNBC of the collaboration between Sony and Disney.
The last film to earn over $1 billion was “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019 which also was distributed through Walt Disney Studios.
Runner up for the Christmas box-office sweepstakes was “The Battle of Lake Changjin,” the most expensive Chinese film ever made about Chinese soldiers defeating the American army in a battle during the Korean War, grossing approximately $900 million this weekend.
