Co-CEO of Korean tech giant Samsung, Han Jong-Hee, has died of a cardiac arrest today. Jong-Hee was 63.
Samsung paid a private tribute to Jong-Hee, who dedicated more than 37 years of his career to the company. Jong-Lee became Samsung’s CEO in 2022.
The internal company message said, “Our deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
The newly appointed Jun Young-Hyun, who was named co-CEO just last week, will remain the sole CEO, according to Samsung.
Jong-Hee’s passing comes at a challenging time for the company, following its recent struggles with weak earnings due to a decline in performance against rivals in memory chips and contract chip manufacturing. Additionally, Samsung has lost its position at the top of the smartphone market and now trails behind its competitor, Apple.
Samsung shares have fallen slightly in today’s pre-market trading since Jong-Hee’s passing.
