A report from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that Americans are still spending actively, fueled by summer sales promotions and anticipation of upcoming tariffs.
The report stated: “Advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for July 2025, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $726.3 billion, up 0.5 percent from the previous month, and up 3.9 percent from July 2024.”
The Commerce Department’s data includes spending at restaurants and online.
“Retail trade sales were up 0.7 percent from June 2025, and up 3.7 percent from last year. Nonstore retailers were up 8.0 percent from last year, while food service and drinking places were up 5.6 percent from July 2024.”
Retail Census Bureau’s sales figures are adjusted to account for seasonal fluctuations, but not for inflation.
Consumers remain the main drivers of the U.S. economy, contributing approximately 70% of the economic output.
Although consumer sentiment initially dropped when President Trump implemented his economic policies, the latest report shows that Americans haven’t cut back their spending at the checkout, fueled by low unemployment and increasing consumer confidence.
