OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on X that Peter Steinberger, the creator of the competing AI agent OpenClaw, is joining OpenAI.
Altman’s headhunting occurs as leading AI companies compete fiercely to recruit top AI talent.
In his post, Altman wrote:
“Peter Steinberger is joining OpenAI to drive the next generation of personal agents. He is a genius with a lot of amazing ideas about the future of very smart agents interacting with each other to do very useful things for people. We expect this will quickly become core to our product offerings. OpenClaw will live in a foundation as an open source project that OpenAI will continue to support. The future is going to be extremely multi-agent and it’s important to us to support open source as part of that.”
No financial terms have been disclosed regarding the recruitment.
Previously known as Clawdbot and Moltbot, OpenClaw was launched last month by Steinberger and has since surged in popularity.
The company markets itself as “the AI that actually does things,” running directly on users’ operating systems and within their applications. It can automate tasks such as managing emails and calendars, browsing the web, and interacting with online services.
In May, OpenAI acquired Jony Ive’s AI devices startup, io, for over $6 billion.
