A co-founder and former chief scientist for OpenAI has announced that he’s starting his own AI company, Safe Superintelligence, Inc. (SSI), that’s focused on “creating a safe and powerful AI system.”
Ilya Sutskever led the effort last year to remove OpenAI CEO Sam Latman from the company, then left the organization herself in May this year. She’s joined by Daniel Gross, former AI lead at Apple, and Daniel Levy, former OpenAI technical staff member, as co-founders of the new operation.
An announcement about the SSI shared that it “approaches safety and capabilities in tandem.” It also noted that companies such as OpenAI, Google and Microsoft put external pressures on AI teams, but that SSI’s “singular focus” will eliminate “distraction by management overhead or product cycles.”
“Our business model means safety, security, and progress are all insulated from short-term commercial pressures,” the announcement said. “This way, we can scale in peace.”
