The Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant’s Unit 3, the first built-from-scratch U.S. nuclear reactor in decades, began commercial operations in Georgia on Monday.
Plant Vogtle’s Unit 3 reportedly has a 1,100 megawatt capacity at full power and is capable of providing energy to 500,000 homes in businesses.
However, the project was reportedly completed $17 billion over budget and seven years behind schedule.
A fourth nuclear reactor unit on the Plant Vogtle site is expected to enter commercial operations by March of next year.
