In an address to the nation today, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke about her country’s treatment during Trump’s highly anticipated “Liberation Day” tariffs. The President praised Trump’s approach to Mexico and credited their blossoming respectful relationship.
“There are no additional tariffs to Mexico and that is good for the country,” Sheinbaum said, “This has to do with the good relationship we have constructed with the US government, based on collaboration but with respect.”
Marcelo Ebrard, Economic Minister, spoke of Mexico’s “preferential treatment” by President Trump, believing “President Sheinbaum’s strategy has worked. We (Mexico) have a preferential treatment.”
The White House confirmed that tariffs on non-USCMA compliant products would remain in effect until the issues of fentanyl and illegal immigration are resolved.
In recent weeks, Sheinbaum has received global praise for her “cool head” and “wait and see” strategy regarding tariffs. “We’ll have to wait and see what President Trump says, and from there, we’ll have to decide, one way or another, what decisions we’d make,” Sheinbaum stated on Wednesday.
Sheinbaum is currently negotiating with the U.S. about Mexico’s auto industry, which is one of its largest markets for imports to the U.S.
