The Oculus VR app, used to manage Meta’s virtual reality headset was the most popular download in the App Store on Christmas, indicating an initial surge in the popularity in the metaverse concept being promoted as the next step for the social media company formerly known as Facebook.
This comes in the wake of Facebook’s name change to Meta in October as founder Mark Zuckerberg set his sights on creating a virtual world in which people could work and play, and supposedly view advertisements.
At the time of the announcement the company said it would spend $10 billion over the next year developing technologies required for building the metaverse.
Facebook’s stock is up to $345 this Monday from $312 on October 27th the day before the announcement of the change in direction and name.
After the Oculus VR app came perennial favorites TikTok, Youtube, Snapchat and Instagram as most downloaded apps in the App store on Christmas day.
