Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump for the first time since he was elected, at the White House today.
The much-anticipated meeting of the two leaders is expected to spark discussions on national security and the United States-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement.
Carney, who spent years in finance, is expected to take a firm stance with Trump on tariffs and be prepared to impose additional tariffs on the U.S. if necessary.
Canada’s Prime Minister said, “These are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never, ever happen.”
In the lead-up to the meeting, Trump said, “He’s coming to see me. I’m not sure what he wants to see me about, but I guess he wants to make a deal. Everybody does. They all want to make a deal because we have something that they all want.”
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that reaching a deal with Canada would be “very complex.”
