Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told the media that tariffs are here to stay, despite a federal appeals court ruling last week that blocked many of the Trump administration’s sweeping tariffs.
The Commerce Secretary also warned that the 90-day pause on Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs is almost over, clarifying that there won’t be any further extensions given. “That’s the deadline and the President’s just going to determine what rates people have. If they can’t get a deal done, President Trump is going to determine what deal there’s going to be.”
Lutnick stated that President Trump “has so many other authorities that even in the weird and unusual circumstance where this was taken away, we just bring on another or another or another.”
On Sunday, Trump took to Truth Social, stating, “If the Courts somehow rule against us on Tariffs, which is not expected, that would allow other Countries to hold our Nation hostage with their anti-American Tariffs that they would use against us. This would mean the Economic ruination of the United States of America!”
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also weighed in on the issue by stating that President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are currently working on an aggreement and will meet “very soon.” “We’ll see after the president speaks with the party chairman,” Bessent stated.
