Justin Trudeau hangs on as Prime Minister of Canada for a second term.
The embattled Canadian leader will return as prime minister after he won re-election, but there’s a catch, his Liberal Party lost its majority in the House of Commons in Canada’s general election.
According to Reuters, Trudeau’s Liberals held onto power after a closely fought election on Monday but were reduced to a minority government that will need the support in Parliament of a smaller left-leaning party, showing a deeply divided country with the defeated Conservatives winning the popular vote while a resurgent separatist Bloc Quebecois made big strides in the mainly French-speaking province of Quebec.
This Tuesday morning results showed that the Liberal Party had won 157 seats, short of the 170 necessary to win a majority. The Conservative Party won 121 seats and won the popular vote with 34%.
“From coast to coast to coast, tonight Canadians rejected division and negativity. They rejected cuts and austerity. They voted in favor of a progressive agenda and strong action on climate change,” Trudeau said. “We will make life more affordable, we will continue to fight climate change, we will get guns off our streets.”
