A Federal judge has issued an order to continue a ban preventing Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing Treasury Department records.
The original ban, put in place last week, is in response to a lawsuit brought forward by 19 Democratic attorneys against President Donald Trump. A hearing about the pending lawsuit will be held in a Manhattan court on Friday.
According to court documents, the Democratic attorneys are concerned that the Treasury Department records, which contain sensitive personal data for millions of Americans, should be handled by “civil servants” not DOGE’s “political appointees.”
Justice Department attorneys from Washington and New York spoke out against the ban, stating that it should be immediately reversed as it is “unconstitutional” and a “remarkable intrusion on the Executive Branch.” The JD attorneys noted that there is no basis for distinguishing between “civil servants” and “political appointees.”
Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has been tasked with finding and eliminating wasteful government spending.
