President Donald Trump has warned that he could destroy Iran’s energy infrastructure if no agreement is reached to end the conflict.
The President took to Truth Social early Monday, stating, “The United States of America is in serious discussions with A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME to end our Military Operations in Iran. Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately “Open for Business,” we will conclude our lovely “stay” in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet “touched.” This will be in retribution for our many soldiers, and others, that Iran has butchered and killed over the old Regime’s 47 year “Reign of Terror.” Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP”
His remarks come as the Iran conflict reaches its fifth week, and as the Trump administration considers deploying ground troops to capture Kharg Island, a key fuel hub that is central to Iran’s oil industry.
It is estimated that about 90% of the country’s crude exports pass through it before tankers travel through the Strait of Hormuz. The island is also believed to have a loading capacity of approximately 7 million barrels per day.
Trump’s remarks come a day after he told reporters that Tehran agreed to “most of” the 15-point proposal of ceasefire terms put forward by the US through intermediaries in Pakistan.
Iran set out five conditions in response, one of which is to preserve control over the Strait of Hormuz.
