President Donald Trump withdrew his direction to implement tariffs and sanctions on Colombia after the country denied two military planes carrying deported migrants the right to land.
Via Truth Social, Trump announced that he would impose an emergency 25% tariff on all Colombian goods entering the U.S. and increase it to 50% within a week.
“I was just informed that two repatriation flights from the United States, with a large number of Illegal Criminals, were not allowed to land in Colombia. This order was given by Colombia’s Socialist President Gustavo Petro, who is already very unpopular amongst his people,” Trump stated, “These measures are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States!”
Within hours of Trump’s post, Colombian President Gustavo Petro used X to announce retaliatory tariffs of 25% on US imports stating that Colombia would assist in transitioning from costly U.S. imports to domestic production.
However, by early Monday, The White House released a statement saying that Colombia had “agreed to all of President Trump’s terms, including the unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia returned from the United States, including on US military aircraft, without limitation or delay.”
The statement said, “unless Colombia fails to honor this agreement,” the South American country will avoid tariffs.
President Petro reposted the Whitehouse statement after it was issued.
