Today, President Donald Trump criticized China on Truth Social, claiming it had “violated” its trade agreement with the U.S.
Trump wrote: “I made a FAST DEAL with China in order to save them from what I thought was going to be a very bad situation, and I didn’t want to see that happen. Because of this deal, everything quickly stabilized and China got back to business as usual.”
“The bad news is that China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US. So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!”
Trump did not clarify how he believes China is breaching the agreement. On May 12, both countries agreed to a 90-day pause on most of the tariffs enacted since early April.
According to the agreement, the U.S. lowered tariffs on Chinese products from 145% to approximately 30%, while China cut its tariffs on American goods to 10%.
On Thursday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent informed the media that trade discussions between the U.S. and China are somewhat “stalled,” suggesting that a call between President Trump and China’s Xi Jinping might be necessary.
Late Wednesday, the trade court voted to block many of Trump’s tariffs, including the flat-rate “reciprocal” tariffs aimed at U.S. trade partners, as well as key China-focused duties.
The U.S. Court of Appeals granted the Trump administration’s request for a temporary administrative stay. The administration must submit its briefings by June 9, after which the court will determine the next steps.
