Today, China has demonstrated an increasing willingness to engage in trade talks with the U.S. and is ready to reach an agreement if the Trump administration shows more respect, which includes limiting disrespectful remarks from officials.
To consider entering talks, Chinese President Xi Jinping seeks a more consistent stance and action from the U.S. on issues such as sanctions and Taiwan.
Chinese officials also insist that the U.S. appoint a presidentially backed “point person” to facilitate a deal between Trump and Xi Jinping.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told the press he believes his administration is close to cutting a deal with 14 major trading partners. “I think if we follow the process, we could have substantial clarity on those 14 away from China in terms of agreements in principle. And then once we reach a level that we’ve agreed on and they’ve agreed to lower their tariffs, lower their non-tariff barriers, currency manipulation, and subsidies of industry and labor, then I think we can move forward.”
White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt stated: “The ball is in China’s court. China needs to make a deal with us. We don’t have to make a deal with them.”
