Following a meeting with President Trump at the G7 Summit, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that the two nations will work to finalize a new economic and security deal within 30 days.
A statement released by the Prime Minister’s office read: “Prime Minister Carney and President Trump … shared updates on key issues raised in negotiations on a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the U.S. To that end, the leaders agreed to pursue negotiations toward a deal within the coming 30 days.”
The PM’s office has not yet confirmed whether the statement indicated that Ottawa accepted the idea of some U.S. tariffs remaining.
Leading up to the meeting, President Trump stated, “I have a tariff concept. Mark has a different concept … we’re going to see if we can get to the bottom of it… I’m a tariff person.”
Before the talks, Canada’s ambassador to Washington stated, “We are in the middle of a discussion – we are not at the end of the discussion. Our position is that we should have no tariffs on Canadian exports to the United States.”
Carney has previously said that Canada is preparing retaliatory measures if tariff talks fall through.
