Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, met with President Trump at the White House to discuss trade and security. The highly anticipated meeting took place without escalating trade tensions.
Trump took to Truth Social before the meeting, making several claims about Canada. “Why is America subsidizing Canada by $200 Billion Dollars a year, in addition to giving them FREE Military Protection, and many other things? We don’t need their Cars, we don’t need their Energy, we don’t need their Lumber, we don’t need ANYTHING they have, other than their friendship.”
During the meeting, Carney addressed Trump’s wish to make Canada the 51st state by saying Canada “respectfully” is not going to change its view on the issue. “As you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale,” the PM stated, “Having met with the owners of Canada over the course of the campaign … it’s not for sale. Won’t be for sale, ever.”
Carney reminded Trump that Canada is “the largest client of the United States,” in an attempt to encourage the President to honor the USMCA free trade with its northern neighbor and lower tariffs.
However, despite both leaders confirming their willingness to strike a deal, Carney and Trump stated after the meeting that an agreement had not yet been reached. “This is not necessarily a one-day deal. This is over a period of time they have to make that decision,” Trump said, “Just the way it is.”
