Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has responded to Trump’s violation of their trade agreement by imposing immediate retaliatory tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods.
Trudeau stated that Ottawa will also implement $125 billion in additional tariffs on March 25. “Canada will not let this unjustified decision go unanswered,” the Prime Minister stated.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has hinted at retaliation by reiterating a previous threat to cut off energy supply to the U.S. in response to the new administration’s tariffs. “If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do everything, including cut off their energy, with a smile on my face. And I’m encouraging every other province to do the same… they need to fell the pain.”
Tiffany Smith, Vice President of the National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC), said the organization is “deeply concerned” about the tariffs, which could “raise costs for American businesses and consumers and undermine U.S. economic growth.”
“Imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico threatens to chill a collaborative effort to strengthen our shared border and risks starting a trade war with America’s closest trading partners,” Smith said.
