Today, a group of 3,200 Boeing defense unit workers walked off the job hours after rejecting the company’s latest contract offer, which included wage increases for employees at the top of the pay scale and enhanced retirement benefits.
The strike follows Boeing’s offer of a 20% wage raise to its defense unit employees, along with a $5,000 ratification bonus and additional benefits.
According to their union, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Local 837 rejected the latest offer on Sunday.
The IAM union posted on X: “3,200 highly-skilled IAM Union members at Boeing went on strike at midnight because enough is enough. This is about respect and dignity, not empty promises.”
In a statement, Dan Gillian, VP of Boeing’s Air Dominance unit said: “We’re disappointed our employees rejected an offer that featured 40% average wage growth.”
Tom Boelling, IAM District 837 Directing Business Representative stated, “IAM District 837 members have spoken loud and clear, they deserve a contract that reflects their skill, dedication, and the critical role they play in our nation’s defense. We stand shoulder to shoulder with these working families as they fight for fairness and respect on the job.”
The strike deals a significant blow to the aviation giant as the company struggles to recover from a series of problems, including safety concerns and a nearly eight-week walkout by passenger plane workers last year.
