The House on Wednesday passed legislation that would require the Chinese owner of video app TikTok to sell or it would be banned in the United States. The bill, which Republicans fast-tracked through the house, passed 352 to 65.
The bill will now go to Senate, where Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer has seemed vague about bringing it to the floor for a vote. If it does pass through the Senate to become law, the legislation would like come up against legal challenges.
“This is a common-sense measure to protect our national security,” said Rep. Mike Gallagher, a Republican from Wisconsin.
A spokesperson from TikTok, Alex Haurek, said that the company is hopeful that the Senate will “consider the act, listen to their constituents and realize the impact on the economy—seven million small business—and the 170 million Americans who use our service.”
