With a dead heat between the running candidates, large companies such as Uber, Lyft, Krispy Kreme, Starbucks and Ikea are doing their bit to encourage Americans to head to polling booths today.
It is illegal to pay people to vote or register to vote however, companies can profit today by offering customers perks, promotions and discounts. The 2024 Election turnout is tipped to break records, and with many people taking the day, or part of it, off to vote, an election day promotion can not only encourage customer participation at the polls – but is big for business.
Today Uber customers can click “Go Vote!” and receive 50% off trips to their local polling booth. Uber is also offering 25% off Uber Eats orders up to $15, with a $25 minimum.
Lyft is offering its customers a 50% discount when heading out to vote. The company stated that since it began offering election day discounts, it has assisted 3 million people to make their vote. Jerry Golden, Lyft’s chief policy officer, said, “Lyft believes transportation access should never be a barrier for any citizen seeking to vote.”
Krispy Kreme is today giving away doughnuts in honor of “DOUGHmocracy.” With customers receiving a free original glazed doughnut – proof of vote is unnecessary. Similarly, participating Ikea locations will offer customers a free frozen yoghurt without proof of purchase or vote.
Companies that have recently struggled with revenue and closures, including Starbucks, Wendy’s and Shake Shack, are also throwing their support behind the election celebrations to revive customer relations and boost sales. Today, Starbucks offers its customers 30% off delivery. At the same time, Wendy’s and Shake Shack offer their customers a free burger with any purchase over $25.
